Every year, Finland holds a competition to find the most charming country houses, and in 2023, a 1920s cottage in Espoo took the title. Let’s take a virtual tour to explore why thousands of people voted for it.

Thirty applicants vied for the honor this year, inviting journalists into their homes to showcase their way of life. The winning house, though over a century old, boasts a timeless appeal with its small, tidy, two-storey structure covered in light grey boards.

Originally built in 1926, the cottage underwent a renovation in the early 1990s, adding a veranda and an open terrace above it, expanding the total area to one hundred square meters.

The ground floor features a kitchen, living room, and veranda, while the first floor houses a bedroom and terrace, perfect for summer relaxation.

Some may find the house simple, but therein lies its charm. The cozy terrace is adorned with bright blue chairs, imparting a Mediterranean feel, while inside, the kitchen is compact yet functional, with white walls and light grey accents to create an airy atmosphere.

The living room continues the theme of brightness, with mirrors creating the illusion of space and a Scandinavian minimalism evident in the furnishings.

Upstairs, the bedroom exudes warmth with a custom-made wooden headboard from Karelia, embodying simplicity and elegance.

The bathroom stands out dramatically with its bold colors, contrasting sharply with the rest of the house, yet still maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. Outside, the courtyard offers a serene retreat with a terrace and separate dining area, perfect for gatherings with friends and family.

The cottage’s charm extends to its surroundings, with flowers adorning the exterior and mini-greenhouses dotting the yard, showcasing the owners’ love for gardening. Even in winter, the cottage exudes coziness, making it a truly enchanting retreat year-round.
