Journey to Fulfillment:

At 51, Hilkka embarked on a bold venture. To purchase and refurbish a 1920s mill, she liquidated her assets, including her apartment in Turku, her vehicle, and personal belongings, retaining only her bicycle and a single outfit. Financial assistance came through loans and help from her brother. Despite her artistic talents, Hilkka’s artwork had yet to become a significant source of income.

Renovation of the Mill:

The mill, which had seen better days, was surrounded by untended vegetation and a decaying fence. Originally a sawmill until 1964, it was later converted into a grain mill, only to be deserted and left in disrepair for decades.

Skeptics doubted Hilkka’s ability to transform this derelict structure into a livable space. The extensive renovations spanned a decade, during which Hilkka devoted her life savings, secured loans, and enlisted the help of friends and volunteers.

She tackled the overgrowth, partially deconstructed the building, and fashioned it into a home, all while overcoming personal adversities, including a broken ankle and two strokes, without ever losing hope.

Now, the mill serves a dual purpose as Hilkka’s residence and an art gallery showcasing her work. The home’s decor is a testament to her artistic flair, adorned with paintings, handcrafted rugs, vintage furniture, and a fireplace built from the mill’s original bricks.
