Tony Hudgell faced immense challenges from the very beginning of his life. Born to parents who mistreated him, Tony lost both his legs due to the severe abuse he endured. However, despite these hardships, Tony accomplished something truly remarkable: he raised approximately $2.2 million for charity by embarking on walks and climbing mountains with his crutches. Remarkably, at just nine years old, he became the youngest recipient of the British Empire Medal for his contributions to preventing child mistreatment.

Tony’s journey began amidst a series of medical crises, including fractures, dislocations, and organ failures, all stemming from the mistreatment he endured from his biological parents, Anthony Smith and Jody Simpson, who were subsequently imprisoned. Yet, despite the physical and emotional scars he bore, Tony was determined to turn his adversity into a force for good.

In 2016, Tony found a new family when Paula and Mark adopted him, providing unwavering support. Together, they established the Tony Hudgell Foundation, dedicated to helping children facing similar challenges. Over the years, Tony tirelessly raised funds for the hospital that saved his life, undertaking remarkable feats like a sponsored 10 km walk and a mountain climb in the Lake District.

Inspired by the efforts of Captain Tom, who raised funds for Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Tony set out on his own fundraising journey. Initially aiming for a modest target, Tony exceeded all expectations by raising $2.2 million through his sponsored walk.

But Tony’s ambitions didn’t stop there. Setting his sights on new challenges, he conquered Orrest Head with mountaineer Hari Budha Magar, the first double above-the-knee amputee to summit Everest. Tony’s adoptive mother, Paula, described the emotional impact of witnessing Tony’s achievements and expressed her pride in his resilience and determination.

Tony’s journey serves as a powerful inspiration to overcome adversity and make a positive impact. His advocacy for tougher penalties for child mistreatment led to national recognition, including the British Empire Medal and a Pride of Britain award.

Despite his accolades, Tony remains committed to his mission of preventing other children from suffering as he did, demonstrating that courage and determination can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
