A small shelf adorned with trinkets  creates a welcoming ambiance in the miniature entryway  – a space traditionally used to remove shoes and store umbrellas.

A narrow corridor leads to the main room, where a double bed sits bathed in natural light from the sole window. The space between the bed and the curtain transforms into a living area. Low floor cushions replace chairs, surrounding a low table perfect for tea ceremonies.

Behind the bed lies a hidden gem – a tiny balcony. Even in compact apartments, the Japanese cherish the connection to the outdoors. While access requires maneuvering through the bed, Keiko finds solace in the fresh air this balcony offers.

However, space limitations necessitate mounting the air conditioner’s indoor unit above the door, a testament to the constant optimization of square footage.

Back in the corridor, curiosity draws us to the locked doors. Behind one lies a cleverly concealed storage cupboard, while the other reveals a fully functional kitchen condensed into a mere few meters. A sink, tiles, and even a tumble dryer are present, each element designed for maximum space efficiency.

The combined bathroom, reminiscent of an airplane lavatory in size, showcases the ultimate space-saving solution – a single faucet serving both the sink and bathtub. Replacing a traditional router, a portable device provides mobile internet connectivity.

While devoid of clutter, Keiko’s apartment lacks nothing essential for a comfortable life.
