“The Price of Fame”: What Beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones Paid For Fame
Her life appears to have it all: an awe-inspiring film career, global recognition, a robust marriage to Michael Douglas. However, of late, Catherine and her husband have weathered such storms that her mental stability has been tested.
The future starlet was born and brought up in Britain. Her artistic inclinations were identified at an early stage. By the age of 4, the little girl was performing songs in church.
At 10, she was partaking in local theatre productions. Following her school education, Catherine migrated to London, where she was cast in a variety of shows. She landed her first role at the tender age of 17 (“42nd Street”), and by 20, she was playing substantial parts in films and TV shows. At 24, Zeta-Jones moved her base to Hollywood.
When questioned about her path to success, the celebrity disclosed that she consistently dedicated a significant amount of time to honing discipline. Her daily schedule was designed to ensure time for every activity beneficial to her. The only aspect of her life that was in a standstill was her love life. Her first relationship didn’t materialize until she was 20 years old.
In 1996, Catherine featured in the mini-series “Titanic”. The actress’s performance had such a profound impact on Steven Spielberg that he promptly offered her a role in his film “The Mask of Zorro”. She was spared the auditioning process. Upon the film’s release, Zeta-Jones enjoyed immense popularity.
She was elevated to Hollywood stardom and her paychecks were in the ballpark of millions of dollars. She further secured her status with the films “Trap” and “Traffic”.
She bagged an Oscar for her portrayal of Velma in the musical “Chicago”. Notably, she was so engrossed in her work that she didn’t even take maternity leave when her children were born.
“The Mask of Zorro” indeed proved to be a boon for her. Besides a prosperous career, Catherine also found love. During a private screening of the film, she crossed paths with Mike Douglas, who candidly (albeit jokingly) expressed his wish to father her children. Initially, the actress didn’t take him seriously, given his marital status and reputation as a notorious womanizer.
However, after a few months, she gave into his advances and consented to marry him. The couple was soon blessed with a son, Dylan Michael, followed by a daughter, Caris, three years later. Catherine confessed that she was smitten with her husband the moment she set eyes on him. She is convinced that their union was destined, given they share the same birthday (barring a 25-year age difference).
After meeting his wife, Michael ceased his numerous affairs and emerged as a model family man. Their life was blissful for 10 years until Michael was diagnosed with stage-four throat cancer. Concurrently, their son was arrested and incarcerated for possession and sale of illicit substances.
Catherine provided unwavering support to her husband during his battle with cancer. She was a constant presence by his side and nursed him throughout the challenging treatment. Michael soon announced that he had defeated cancer, and he resumed his acting career.
However, Catherine’s mental health began to deteriorate due to stress. Her bipolar disorder flared up, leading to her admission to a psychiatric clinic. She bravely disclosed her illness to the public, providing hope and inspiration to others with similar conditions.
Catherine even contemplated ending her acting career but was drawn back when offered the role of Griselda in “The Godmother of Cocaine”.
To attain peace of mind, the actress and her husband frequently retreat to their home in Spain, where she captures photos of sunsets and spends a considerable time admiring them. This ritual assists her in feeling like a normal individual.
