Her husband’s sudden death in 1914 left Mary Ann to fend for herself and her children in dire financial straits. Rejected by society and unable to find work due to her altered appearance, she saw a glimmer of hope in an advertisement for a circus contest seeking the “ugliest woman in the world.” Winning the contest offered her a stable income and employment opportunities.

Thus began Mary Ann’s circus career, enduring the audience’s disdainful stares to provide for her family. Over years of performances across Europe and America, she earned a substantial sum, equivalent to $800,000 today. Despite increasing pain and blindness, Mary Ann continued performing until her death in 1933 at the age of 59.
